Can you give the biblical verses and reasoning why it is a sin to be gay?

By Pastor Nathan

That’s an important and sensitive question. I want to answer it clearly and biblically, and also carefully.

First, Scripture teaches that God designed marriage and sexual intimacy to be between one man and one woman in covenant union.

Genesis 1:27 says God created humanity male and female in His image.

Genesis 2:24 says, “A man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

Jesus affirms this design in Matthew 19:4–6, pointing back to creation as God’s intent for marriage.

From the beginning, the biblical framework for sexual expression is covenant marriage between a man and a woman.

Second, Scripture speaks directly about same-sex sexual behavior.

Leviticus 18:22 calls a man lying with a man as with a woman “an abomination.”

Romans 1:26–27 describes same-sex relations as contrary to nature and part of humanity’s rebellion against God.

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 includes men who practice homosexuality in a list of sins, and then says, “And such were some of you. But you were washed… sanctified… justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

The consistent biblical witness is that same-sex sexual activity falls outside of God’s design and is therefore sin.

Now, it’s important to say this carefully:

The Bible does not single out homosexuality as a worse sin than others. Sexual sin, heterosexual or homosexual, is treated seriously. Lust, adultery, pornography, fornication, and same-sex behavior are all outside God’s design.

Also, experiencing same-sex attraction is not the same thing as acting on it. Temptation itself is not sin. Acting on desires outside God’s design is.

Most importantly, the gospel is for everyone. 1 Corinthians 6:11 is key. “Such were some of you.” The early church included people who had lived in many kinds of sexual sin. The message was not condemnation alone. It was repentance and transformation through Christ.

Biblically, something is sin because it falls short of God’s revealed will and design. The reasoning is not hatred or cultural reaction. It is rooted in:

1. God’s created order (male and female complementarity)

2. The covenant picture of marriage reflecting Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:31–32)

3. The consistent prohibition of same-sex sexual behavior throughout Scripture

That said, this topic must always be handled with humility. Every person is made in the image of God. Every person needs grace. And the church must speak truth without cruelty and hold conviction without self-righteousness.

A Prayer for This Season

Lord, You are holy and You are good. Help me submit my thoughts, desires, and identity to Your Word, not my feelings or culture. Guard my heart from pride and from fear. Teach me to hold truth with humility and compassion. Help me reflect both Your holiness and Your mercy in how I think, speak, and love others. Amen.
