I’m a Christian, but Sometimes I Feel Close to Jesus and Other Times So Far Away. Is He Holding That Against Me?

By Pastor Nathan

Many believers quietly carry this tension. Some days Christ feels near, personal, present. Other days He feels distant, silent, almost unreachable. If you have served in ministry, led worship, or been deeply involved in church life, that shift can feel even heavier.

First, feelings are not the measure of Christ’s presence.

Hebrews 13:5 says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
That promise is not anchored to your emotions. It is anchored to His character.

There will be seasons when your heart feels full and responsive, and others when it feels dry. David wrote in Psalm 13, “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?” Even faithful believers experience spiritual distance. The difference is that they bring that feeling to God instead of hiding from Him.

Regarding church: Scripture calls believers to gather (Hebrews 10:24–25), not because attendance earns favor, but because we need the body. If you are between churches, that is not a sin in itself. But isolation can slowly weaken joy and clarity. Christ does not hold honest searching against you. He does call you toward fellowship.

You said you know how to feed yourself the Word. That is a gift. Many believers never learn that discipline. But even mature believers need shepherding, community, and shared worship.

The nearness you feel some days is not because you perform well. The distance you feel other days is not punishment. Romans 8:1 says, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” If you belong to Him, He is not withdrawing affection because of a season of transition.

Sometimes spiritual dryness is an invitation, not rejection. An invitation to seek Him again. To worship privately. To pray honestly. To ask Him where He is leading you next.

He is not fragile. He is not offended by your questions. He is a faithful Savior who keeps His own.

A Prayer for This Season

Lord Jesus, when You feel near, help me rest. When You feel distant, anchor me in Your promises. Lead me into healthy community. Amen.
