What Is Ash Wednesday?

By Pastor Nathan

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent in many Christian traditions. Lent is a 40-day period (not counting Sundays) leading up to Easter. It is intended as a time of reflection, repentance, prayer, and preparation for remembering the death and resurrection of Jesus.

On Ash Wednesday, some churches place ashes on a person’s forehead in the shape of a cross. As this happens, words like “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19) are often spoken. The ashes are a visible reminder of human mortality and the seriousness of sin.

The practice is rooted in biblical imagery. In Scripture, ashes and sackcloth were outward signs of repentance and humility before God (see Job 42:6 and Jonah 3:6). The ashes are not magical. They do not forgive sin. They are symbolic.

It’s important to understand that Ash Wednesday is not commanded in Scripture. You will not find a New Testament instruction requiring Christians to observe it. Some believers participate as a meaningful tradition that helps focus their hearts on repentance and the gospel. Others choose not to observe it, seeking to avoid adding practices not explicitly commanded in the Bible.

The heart behind the day, if it is observed rightly, is biblical: remembering our need for a Savior and preparing our hearts for Easter. But righteousness does not come from observing a calendar. It comes through faith in Christ alone.

Whether you observe Ash Wednesday or not, the deeper question remains the same: Are you walking in repentance and faith daily?

A Prayer for This Season

Lord, remind me of my need for You. Guard me from empty religion and draw my heart toward true repentance. Amen.
